Can senior high school student work part-time?
Answer
Those who have turned 15 and have reached March 31st are permitted to work. As long as the senior high school which they are enrolled in permits part-time work, senior high school students may work too. Since they are minors under the age of 18 and still inexperienced to work in society, they are protected by the law as follows.
※Illegal part-time jobs (Yami Baito), in which the worker receives payment for criminal acts, have been spreading through SNS and other platforms. Never apply for a job casually because of the “high income.” By providing your ID, family information, etc., you will be trapped in a criminal organization. Be cautious not to provide any personal, private information about yourself unnecessarily.
- When applying for a job, you will be required to present a parental consent form, proof of age, and residence card. ※ Those who have the status of residence of “Dependent” or “Student,” are allowed to work up to 28 hours per week if the “Application for permission to engage in activities other than those permitted by status of residence” is applied at the Immigration Services Bureau. Please note that if you work more than 28 hours per week, your status of residence may not be renewed.
- Restrictions or prohibitions on dangerous or hazardous work are included in the job description.
- Regarding working hours, restrictions on late-night work and overtime and holiday work, working under variable working hours system is also prohibited.

Continued Stay in Japan after the Expiration of the Period of Stay
Answer
Continued stay in Japan after the expiration of the period of stay constitutes “illegal stay” under the Immigration Control Law, and in principle, re-entry into Japan will be prohibited for five years. The period of prohibition could also be permanent, depending on the reason for deportation (type of criminal act or severity of punishment).
Deportation
If a foreigner deliberately continues to stay in Japan after the expiration of the period of stay, a deportation order will be given to the foreigner. Those who turn themselves in at the Immigration Bureau and those who have been arrested will be treated differently. In the case of turning yourself in
If the foreigner voluntarily turns themselves in at the Immigration Bureau before being arrested by the police, he or she will be allowed to return home without being prosecuted. In the case of an arrest
If the foreigner has been arrested by the police, he or she will either be sent to the Immigration Bureau within ten days after the arrest, or prosecuted. If prosecuted, he or she will be held in a detention center or detained by the police until a judgment is given, which usually requires about 45 days. After a judgment is passed, he or she will be sent to the Immigration Bureau and then deported.Ordinary Departure from Japan
If a foreigner has to illegally stay in Japan for a very short period of time due to an illness or other unavoidable cause, the foreigner will be required to complete procedures for extension of the period of stay and then leave Japan.Consultation contents
